Pre-Primary

The Mini Class (2-3yo) is a 30 minute lesson introducing Shine’s tiniest students to the wonderful world of song and dance.  This “parent-assisted” class incorporates lots of creative movements with the use of fun props and sounds.  During each lesson the children will also learn a range of groovy actions to fun and recognisable music.  The ultimate aim of the Mini class is to prepare the students to associate body movements with music beats in a vibrant and nurturing environment.
**Please note the Mini students do not participate in our End of Year Concerts. Instead, they will have an in-house “mini-concert” during their last lesson of the year.**

The Kinder (3-4 y.o) and Prep (5-6 y.o) classes build on from the basics of the Mini class in an independent format.  The class begins with an energetic warm up and a gentle stretch to increase their heart rate and get their bodies flexible.  The next part of the class consists of learning elementary Funk/Jazz dance technique and routines to fun and modern pop songs… and sometimes old classics too!  Following the routine, the teacher will introduce the basics of singing tuition that teaches the students how to understand singing beats and learning song words.  The class often concludes with some Ballet &/or fun dance games to warm down.  The most important noticeable benefits to your child will be co-ordination and confidence.

Although these students are our youngest performers at Shine, they certainly merit the biggest applause at our End of Year Concerts.  Many parents are simply amazed at what their children can achieve in such a relatively short time throughout the year.  The Kinder & Prep students will only be expected to perform in one End of Year Concert.

Dress Code:

Leotards, fairy skirts, cross overs and leggings are encouraged. No loose tracksuits or baggy clothing. Once enrolled into the class, Shine will provide information on which dance shoes you need to purchase.

Funk/Jazz

This style is our most popular at Shine.  For those of you who are unfamiliar with dance, Jazz is the type of conventional dancing you would see at the Theatre or Cabaret, whilst Funk is the modern version of dance that’s inspired by the latest pop culture such as Video Clips, Films and Street Dance.  At Shine, we combine the two styles of dance to give our students the best of both worlds in one class.  This class then becomes the perfect synergy for our students, as it allows them to expand on their foundations of Jazz technique (such as kicks, turns, jumps, pirouettes and leaps) with a modern twist (Hip Hop, Lyrical etc).

We have several age groups of Funk/Jazz to cater for our 6-18 year old students – varying in times of 45min and 60min lessons.  The class begins with a warm-up consisting of full body stretching, which then moves onto technique training that concentrates on mastering the foundations of Jazz technique.  A routine is then taught by combining different moves to Funk & Jazz styles of music. The students will conclude the lesson with a warm down.

Each term the students will learn at least 2 routines of Funk &/or Jazz.  These classes form a huge part of our End of Year Concerts in which each class is typically only in one concert.

Shine also caters for excelling 6-18 year old students.  By invitation only, Shine offers students a place in our separate ‘Show Group’ classes which perform at varying shows and competitions around Melbourne.

Dress Code:

Leggings or tight dance shorts are the ideal bottoms.  Tight singlets, t-shirts or leotards are the ideal tops.  No loose tracksuits or baggy clothing.  Once enrolled into the class, Shine will provide information on which dance shoes you need to purchase (Note: 6-11 year olds will need only Jazz shoes, whereas our 12+ year olds will need both Jazz and Funk shoes).

Ballet / Contemporary

Classical Ballet is the most traditional form of dance. Ballet teaches the student co-ordination, flexibility, strength and grace. Being a technically demanding style, Ballet bestows a discipline and synchronisation to enhance one’s technique for all styles of dance.

Shine has modified this traditional form of dance to adapt it to a more modern approach. Our Ballet Contemporary class still contains the traditional Classical Ballet warm-up and technique work. However the big twist comes within the routines that are taught and of course the music. Our Ballet Contemporary classes are a great blend of the old Classical Ballet with a new modern approach to include a less rigid form of dancing in which the exact precision of Classical Ballet technique can be substituted for a more interpretive fluid ease of movement.  This type of fusion has been made popular on shows such as “So You Think You Can Dance.”

These classes begin with an extensive warm-up on the barre concentrating on skills such as turnout and posture.  The class then moves to the centre room in which the techniques learnt at the barre are trained in conjunction with pirouettes, arabesques and leaps.  A routine is then taught to both traditional and modern music, with a cool-down and stretch ending the class.

Within our Ballet/Contemporary style, we have different age groups to cater for our 6-18 year old students.  We also have a 30 minute Pointe class for our older and more experienced students, which is offered only by invitation from Shine.

The Ballet/Contemporary classes participate in our End of Year Concert in which they are typically expected to perform in 2 concerts.

Dress Code:

Specific colour leotards, cross overs, ballet skirts, tights and leggings are required for each age group. Shine will provide information for the correct colours of clothing and footwear requirements once enrolled.

Tap

Since the days of Gene Kelly tapping around in “Singin’ In The Rain”, Tap has withstood the test of time due to its ability to allow each performer to express themselves with fun, vibrant and ever-so-catchy sounds. Tap is a great style of dance to add to a student’s repertoire.

This 45 minute class begins with a warm-up on the barre consisting of basic combinations of feet and arm (yes, arm) movements.  The class then moves on to technique training of more challenging co-ordination/combinations.  A routine is then taught to various types of fun music by combining all the techniques into an energising and skilful dance.

The Tap classes participate in our End of Year Concert in which they are typically expected to perform in one concert.

Dress Code:

Same as Funk/Jazz. Once enrolled into the class, Shine will provide information on which dance shoes you need to purchase.

Singing

Our singing classes are simply not karaoke classes.  Students at Shine will develop skills in breathing, pitch, tone, harmony, voice projection, performance and microphone techniques.  We teach songs from all genres including pop, jazz, R&B, soul, rock and musicals.

Our classes are taught by a tertiary trained professional teacher who is passionate about providing the correct technique to our students at the correct age.  Just like all of our muscles in the body, the throat muscles grow until the age of young adulthood.  Therefore, it is important that singing technique be adapted to the appropriate age group by an appropriately trained teacher.  We have several age groups to cater for our 6-18 year students.

The class begins with warming up the vocal cords using scales. The students then work on controlling their voice with technique which is then applied to learning a song.  The song is first taught using vocal tracks which allows the students to learn the words.  As the class progresses the students are taught to sing the song to a backing track &/or the keyboard.

The Singing classes participate in our End of Year Concert in which they are typically expected to perform in one concert.

Shine also offers 30 minute Private Singing lessons to students on a weekly basis.  These classes are an excellent way to accelerate your child’s ability.  Many of our Private Singing students also perform Solo’s or Duet’s at our End of Year Concerts.

No dress code.  Students will be required to bring a folder and pen to their class.

Boys Hip Hop & Tap

There are no surprises in that boys and girls learn differently.  This is why we have separate Boys classes for 6-9 year olds (Junior) and 10-13 year olds (Intermediate) in which they teach boys how to dance like boys!!

Similar to our Funk/Jazz classes, the boys learn the perfect synergy of Jazz technique with a modern twist of Hip Hop.  Additionally, the boys get to dedicate part of their class to learning Tap.  This is a great way to keep the boys interested and stimulated as all boys like to be!!

The class begins with a warm-up consisting of full body stretching and technique work.  A routine is then taught by combining different moves to Funk & Hip Hop styles of music. The students then move on to Tap technique and conclude the lesson with a Tap routine.

Similar to our Pre-Primary classes, the boys command huge respect from our audience at our End of Year Concerts in which each class is typically only in one concert.

Dress Code:

Shorts, Pants, T-Shirts or Singlets. Not baggy. Once enrolled into the class, Shine will provide information on which dance shoes you need to purchase.
