FUNK / JAZZ

This style is our most popular at Shine. For those of you who are unfamiliar with dance, Jazz is the type of conventional dancing you would see at the Theatre or Cabaret, whilst Funk is the modern version of dance that’s inspired by the latest pop culture such as Video Clips, Films and Street Dance. At Shine, we combine the two styles of dance to give our students the best of both worlds in one class. This class then becomes the perfect synergy for our students, as it allows them to expand on their foundations of Jazz technique (such as kicks, turns, jumps, pirouettes and leaps) with a modern twist (Hip Hop, Lyrical etc).
We have several age groups of Funk/Jazz to cater for our 6-18 year old students – varying in times of 45min and 60min lessons. The class begins with a warm-up consisting of full body stretching, which then moves onto technique training that concentrates on mastering the foundations of Jazz technique. A routine is then taught by combining different moves to Funk & Jazz styles of music. The students will conclude the lesson with a warm down.
Each term the students will learn at least 2 routines of Funk &/or Jazz. These classes form a huge part of our End of Year Concerts in which each class is typically only in one concert.
Shine also caters for excelling 6-18 year old students. By invitation only, Shine offers students a place in our separate ‘Show Group’ classes which perform at varying shows and competitions around Melbourne.
Dress Code:
Leggings or tight dance shorts are the ideal bottoms. Tight singlets, t-shirts or leotards are the ideal tops. No loose tracksuits or baggy clothing. Once enrolled into the class, Shine will provide information on which dance shoes you need to purchase (Note: 6-11 year olds will need only Jazz shoes, whereas our 12+ year olds will need both Jazz and Funk shoes).
